A Chyten ‘how to’ for homeschoolers

Many Asheville-area students are currently working with Chyten tutors to excel in their academic courses at school. But did you know that you can also use Chyten’s services as a supplement to homeschooling?

If you are interested in homeschooling but aren’t sure where to start, you will be pleasantly surprised when you see how simple and organized the home school process is. This website will walk you through the application and requirements. We have had parents tell us that it took them less than 24 hours to be registered as a home school parent!

There are many options of how you want to deliver curriculum and instruction to your children. The very best place to start is with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Standard Course of Study for each topic in each grade.

On the left toolbar, they will not only provide a detailed outline of what topics must be taught in each subject, but they will also provide excellent resources to use in the teaching or supplementing of these topics. We are happy, here at Chyten, to provide some samples of NC Curriculum for your child’s grade level and some sample resources.

The most important thing to realize is that you aren’t alone in this process! At Chyten, we will cover any material that is not being covered at home. Generally, students can do a lot of their reading, language arts, and social studies work at home. Our tutors can supplement with enrichment lessons, ensuring that your kids are learning the higher level, critical-thinking skills necessary in these topics. We do novel studies, timelines, and research projects that are all an important part of their academics. For math and science, our tutors will follow the North Carolina Standards and make sure they are prepared for assessment each semester. As with all Chyten tutoring, our ParentNet system allows you to view all tutor notes from each session, any homework assigned, and focus points for next session.

Assessment

The NCDOA website will outline different options, but parents usually go with the Iowa Tests or Stanford Achievement Tests at the end of each school year. These tests can be administered at Chyten, since we are an accredited testing site. The tests generally are completed over two days and a score report will be mailed within a few weeks. This is the state’s way of checking that your child has made the necessary progress to move to the next grade. It is a very simple procedure and both tests are a comprehensive and cogent assessment of your child’s progress in all curriculum areas. They basically replace end-of-course testing!

If your students are part of the Duke TIP program in seventh and eighth grade, we will also handle all the test preparation for the SAT and ACT, as well. Click here if you need further information about Duke TIP.

Chyten is here for you

Chyten is here for all of your homeschooling needs. We usually will set a tutoring schedule with you and then adjust as needed. To give you some perspective, we have some homeschooled high school students that come about 5-6 hours a week. We have one student that comes daily for three hours. We also have one student athlete that comes all week when he is in town from tournaments and is then on the road again for a couple of weeks, so he Skypes with his tutor when he needs some help with his assignments.

At Chyten, we offer the utmost in flexibility. Homeschooling is usually a great fit for your family’s schedule and budget, while maintaining the importance of a daily routine for children. And remember, there are a multitude of resources that will help you as you offer your children a tailored, focused instructional plan.
